20100918 ◇ a couple of はいくつか？

本日は番外編として a couple of を扱います。一般の辞書では "2" または "2～3" という語義を当てていますが、ジーニアスでは、「最高 4 人くらいまで」という記述があります。本日はこれについて検証しましょう。

・If you refer to a couple of people or things, you mean two or approximately two of them. I think the trouble will clear up in a couple of days.
(人あるいは物に対して a couple of を使用する場合、"2" あるいは "ほぼ 2" を意味します。例: トラブルは 2日くらいで解決すると思うよ。)

【研究】上記は、Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary からの引用です。ここで説明に使われている「少数の」の定義は範囲がやや曖昧になりそうです。

【研究】上記は free dictionary からの引用です。ここで使われている「少数の不特定数」は CAMBRIDGE よりもさらに曖昧さが増しそうです。

この a couple of を、単に "2" と訳すか、"2～3" で訳すかは文脈に依りますが、基本は後者の訳を当てて、不自然な場合に、前者の訳を当てる方が良いでしょう。
