本日は、get along の用法を扱います。これもいろいろな意味で使用されるのでしっかり確認しましょう。

(1) (人が) 去る、出ていく:

・"I must be getting along now," he said. "I've one or two things to do. Glad to have seen you again, Billie. Is the show going all right?"
(「そろそろお暇しなくては。」と彼は言った。「まだやることが一つ二つあるんでね。また会えて本当にうれしかったよ、ビリー。ショーはうまくいきそうかい？」)

【研究】上記の must be going along は日常会話でもよく使用されます。

(2) 暮らす、生活する:

・They don't have much money, but they all get along. Her mother has been in and out of the hospital for the last three months with stomach trouble, and when she's home, she doesn't like to go out.
(彼らはあまりお金はないが何とか暮らしている。彼女の母親はここ 3 ヶ月間入退院を繰り返しており、家に戻ると外出したがらない。)

【研究】この意味では get on もほぼ同義となります。

(3) 折り合いが良い、良い関係を保つ:

・She didn't understand a word we said, and we didn't understand a word she said, but we managed to get along quite well.
(彼女は私たちが言うことを一つも理解しなかったし、私たちも彼女が言うことに何一つ理解を示さなかった。しかし、私たちは非常に良い関係を何とか築いてきた。)
