20100415 no more than と not more than の意味の違い (が存在するか否か)

本日は no more than と not more than の意味の違いを扱います。これは、ネットでも取り上げられているテーマなので、このブログでも考察したいと思います。
この 2 つの表現に違いがあるか否かですが、結論から申し上げると語法上の違いは存在します。下記で詳しく説明しましょう。
(1) A is no more than B:
B を超える数をすべて否定することで、B という数に限定をかけています。つまり、A = B という意味に、「わずか B」「たった B」「ほんの B」という感情的なニュアンスが加わります。
・Sexual contact is not punishable if the age difference is no more than 3 years. (年齢差がわずか 3 年あれば、性交渉による罰則は適用されない。) <http://www.springerlink.com/index/WR065P2312143073.pdf>
→「わずか」の意味から「3 年」という一点に重点が置かれていることが分かると思います。
(2) A is not more than B:
A ≦ B という意味になります。
・Sexual Consent, Any kind of sexual relations with children below the age of 16 years are forbidden unless the age difference is not more than 3 years. →一般の辞書では「at most(多くて)」の意味を強調していますが、上記のように感情的な意味合いを含まず単に「小なりイコール」しか意味しないこともあります。
【結論】厳密には上記のような違いが存在するものの、あまり意識しないで使用される例も多くなっているようです。英訳の際には no more than は only、not more than は at most あるいは...or less あたりを使用するほうが良いでしょう。
