20100413 no more than の用法#4

本日も前回に引き続き、成句としての no more than の用法です。前回は、no more の後ろに名詞や形容詞が来るパターンを見ましたが、ここは述部も可能です。また、not any more...than との書き換えもできます。本日はこれらを含めて考察しましょう。
(1) no more +述部 の構文:
・A robot could no more commit murder than a human could walk on water. (ロボットが自殺する可能性が低いのは、人間が水の上を歩ける可能性が低いのと同じだ。)
・They no more commit suicide than a hamster does. (彼らが自殺をしないのは、ハムスターが自殺をしないのと変わらない。)
→述部を共有する場合、代動詞 do が使用できます。
(2) not any more...than A と書き換えが可能ですが、やや強意的で口語的な響きを伴うと、英語基本形容詞・副詞辞典では解説しています。
・The media isn't interested in this any more than they are interested in telling us the truth about the war in Iraq or the real situation with our Economy. (メディアがこの点にまったく興味を抱かないのは、彼らがイラク戦争での真実あるいは我々の経済の現状に関する記事に興味を抱かないのと同じだ。) <http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x135707>
(3) no more...than の...に a(n) + 形容詞 + 名詞が来ると、no more + 形容詞 + a(n) + 名詞の語順になる点に注意しましょう。
・The values chosen had no more reliable a basis than my own intuition. (ここで選ばれる価値観が信頼に足る基準にならなかったのは、私自身の直感が信頼できる基準にならないのと同様だ。) (Statistical power analysis for the behavioral sciences, Jacob Cohen)
→分詞の形容詞的用法である chosen が単独用法にも関わらず後置修飾する場合は「一過性」のニュアンスが強く出ます。
