20100411 no more than の用法#2

本日は no more A than B の用法です。この表現の基本は「B と同じ数 [量] の A しかない」ですが、ここから意味は発展していきます。本日は基本的な使い方を見ていきましょう。
(1) これは more A than B (B よりも A だ) を no (まったく～ない) で否定しています。つまり、B と比べた時の A の差異を完全否定することで「同等」であることを強調しています。これにも感情的なニュアンスが加わりやすいので、「～しかない」などの表現を加える方が良いでしょう。

(2) no more A than B は、not any more A than B とほぼ同義になります。言うまでもなく、これは no = not any から導かれたものですが、後者の意味は強意的になります。
・Common sense tells us that a woman with several husbands will not have any more children than a women with only one husband. On the other hand, a man with several wives will have more children than a man with only one wife.
