本日も前回の用法です。

1. cannot help but do の構文:

・In October, a survey of approval of the Long-Term Care Insurance System was begun. As it is a totally new system, we cannot help but have a certain apprehension, but with a large number of people cooperating, I pray that the system will bring fruitful results to society at large. (10月には，介護保険制度の認定調査が開始されました。初めて試みられる制度に対し緊張を覚えますが，これが大勢の人々の協力を得，社会にとり良い結果をもたらすものとなるよう祈ります。) 皇后陛下お誕生日に際し（平成11年）：英文 - 宮内庁

【研究】①cannot help but do の表現は規範文法的には避ける傾向にあると言われますが、現在では上記のように宮内省の英文にも現れています。②一般に cannot help doing は口語的、cannot but do は文語的な響きを伴うと言われます。後者の影響から cannot help but do が上記のような硬めの文章で用いられているようです。

2. 認証されていない cannot help doing の亜種:

cannot help but doing および cannot help but to do の用法は一般にはまだ認められていませんが、用例検索すると下記のような結果が得られます。

<古典的正用法>

・cannot help being reminded: 37,200 件

・cannot but be reminded: 16,100 件

<近年認められつつある正用法>

・cannot help but be reminded: 96,200 件

<一般に認められていない用法>

・cannot help but being reminded: 33,200 件

・cannot help but to be reminded: 115,000 件

【研究】上記の点を考慮に入れると、本表現はまだまだ考察する必要がありそうです。
