20100326　enough for... to の構文#4

これまで enough の被修飾語として形容詞の例を挙げてきましたが、当然のことながら副詞も取れます。今回はこの点を説明しましょう。
(1) enough for...to の構文で、副詞 + enough が文頭に置かれると倒置が起きます。
・Slowly enough did John walk for the child to keep up with him. (子供がしっかりとついてこれるようにジョンはゆっくり歩いた ) (Adjectives and Adverbs in English JS Bowers 著 - 1975)
→この倒置はあまり一般的ではないようで、Google の用例検索にはあまりヒットしません。よって積極的な使用は避ける方が良いでしょう。
(2) 副詞 + enough for...so that 構文は、「結果」の意味を含みやすくなります。
・ If you can do this quickly enough, so that the whole screen can be painted in less than about 1/25th of a second, our eyes only perceive the overall image and can't see the drawing process.
