20100223 unless 節を用いた仮定法

今回の前回に引き続き unless 節を扱います。極めて限定的ですが、仮定法 (=却下条件) での unless の使用が規範文法的に認められることがあります。本日はこの点を解説しましょう。

(1) ジーニアスでは仮定法と共に用いられるのは「まれ」として、語法的に成立する例として主節に not が含む文を挙げています。

・We wouldn't have gone to the party unless they had invited us personally.

(2) 現代英語語法大辞典では、主節に not を含む場合、仮定法が可能という記述があり、下記の書籍でもこれを支持する解説と例文があります。

・She wouldn't have gone to university unless her parents had insisted. (Advanced Grammar in Use)

・Unless you had a permit, you couldn't get a job. = If you hadn't a permit you couldn't get a job. (A Practical English Usage)

(3) A Practical English Grammar: For the Use of Schools and Private Students では下記のように仮定法で使用可能な接続詞を挙げています。ここでは特に説明することなく if と並立させる形で、普通に unless の使用が可能としています。

The signs of the subjunctive mode are if, though, lest, except, unless, provided, etc.

(4) Qirk et al.(1972)では仮定法の使用を「まれ」として下記の例を挙げています。

・*Unless you had helped me, I would never have been able to finish on time.

unless ≠ if not の語法解説は辞書や参考書さらにはネットでも多く見かけるので、色々調べてみると面白いと思います。(但し「仮定法」自体を理解していないサイトもあるのでご注意を。。。) 次回は unless と if が共起する語句について解説したいと思います。
