20100216 代名詞を先行詞にする関係代名詞 (we 編)

本日は代名詞 we を先行詞とする関係代名詞です。日本の辞書や文法書ではこれに関する記述がありません。しかし、実際にはかなり見かける表現なので、語法面を含めて考察したいと思います。

1. 形態:
Google で検索すると、we who は 1,980,000 件、we that は 816,000 件ヒットします。よって that の用法は「まれ」ではありませんが、基本は who を使用すると考えると良いでしょう。この用法が規範文法的に正用法かは論議の余地がありそうですが、下記の英文は高校の教科書にも載っているものです。

・If a child on the street who has nothing, is willing to share, why are we who have everything still so greedy? (Severn Suzuki speaking for E.C.O.)

2. 語法:
a) he who に比べると、その使用範囲は広く、「曲名」や「本のタイトル」まで幅広く使用されています。また、下記のように比較的古い俗語的な表現から硬めの表現でも現れることから英語圏では意外に浸透度の高い表現であることが分かります。

・And we who dam'd the rivers by our creditors were damn'd. (James Pierpont)

・We who formerly used to murder one another now refrain from even making war upon our enemies. (Justin Martyr)

b) 非制限用法として、挿入句にも使用されています。

・And we, who are not human, can afford to be humane. (Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) )

c) あまり用例的にはあまり多くない (59,100 件) のですが、関係詞の whose の用法も見られます。非制限用法は we who 同様、挿入句でのみ使用されています。

・I Like this quote I dislike this quote“[W]e who have been born and nurtured on this soil, we, whose habits, manners, and customs are the same in common with other Americans, can never consent to. . . be the bearers of the redress offered by that Society to that much afflicted.” (Richard Allen)

・We, whose generations are ordained in this setting part of time, are providentially taken off from such imaginations; and, being necessitated to eye the remaining particle of futurity, are naturally constituted unto thoughts of the next world, and cannot excusably decline the consideration of that duration, which maketh pyramids pillars of snow, and all that's past a moment.　(Hydriotaphia, or Urne-Buriall (1658), chapter V)

まとめると、この表現は意外に古典的で幅広く支持されている用法であることがお分かり頂けたと思います。極めて俗語的かつローカルな使い方から比較的硬めの表現にまで使用されているのも興味深い点です。he who と異なり、実際の翻訳では文脈に応じた訳を当てるようにしましょう。
