try, attempt, strive, endeavor は似た表現ですが、微妙に意味が異なります。英英辞書で定義を見てもあまり具体的に書かれていません。これに関しては英和辞書の方が明確に定義しています。今回は、英英辞書と英和辞書の定義に触れながら見ていきましょう。

Encarta World English Dictionary [North American Edition] では下記のように定義しています。

・try: to make an attempt or an effort to do something

・attempt: to make an effort to do something, especially without much expectation of success

・strive: to try hard to achieve or get something;

・endeavor: to make a serious and sincere effort to do something

一般に try → attempt → strive → endeavor の順に硬くなり、意味が強くなります。またこれら 4 つは下記のようにまとめることができます。

・try: 「努力」と「試み」を含意する最も一般的な語。

・attempt: try よりも「困難に対する努力」の意味が強い。また、ときに「失敗」も暗示。

・strive: 「困難に対する精力的な取り組み」を強調。また、ときに「周到さ」や「時間的な長さ」も意味する。

・endeavor: 最も硬い語。「真剣で持続的な努力を強調し、義務の遂行や良識ある行為へ向けた努力」(ランダムハウス)、「困難を克服しようとする継続的な強い努力を含意する」(現代英語語法大辞典)
