the way of doing と the way to do はほぼ同義で捉えて、あまり意味の違いを認識しない方もおられると思います。和訳の場合は内容を捉えるのでそれほど影響は出ないでしょうが、英訳ではこのあたりをしっかり区別しないと不自然な英語になることがあります。本日はこの点を詳しく見てみましょう。

現代英語語法大辞典では、way が単に「手段」や「方法」を表す場合、ほぼ同義になるとし、way が「スタイル」を表す、あるいは way に所有格が先行する場合には of doing をとり、to do は取れないと説明しています。

下記に例を挙げてみましょう。

1. 手段や方法を表す場合:

・Object Oriented Technology describes a method for the development of operating software as well as application software for a computer system. Contrary to the traditional, non object oriented ways of developing software, Object Oriented Technology comprises and uses preengineered "methods" and "objects" for the development of software, comparable to tools and parts for the development of an automobile. <http://www.freepatentsonline.com/6106569.html>

→これを見る限りでは、ほぼ同義と考えて良さそうです。

2. スタイルを表す場合:

・You show love in a smile, a pleasant way of speaking, a thoughtful act or a hug. Love is treating people and things with special care and kindness because they mean so much to you.<http://www.ebenezerchildcare.com/Images/PDF/ByLocation/Southside_Newsletter.pdf>

→直観的に不自然と感じる表現ではありますが、a pleasant way to speak を Google で検索しても全くヒットしませんでした。

3. way に所有格が付加される場合:

・File sharing has always been my way of getting the music I want. <http://news.cnet.com/2100-1027_3-5182641.html>

→Google で他の用例を検索してみると、"my way of escaping from" は 651,000 件、"my way to escape from" は 3,070,000 件ヒットします。これを見る限り、3. の定義は絶対的なものではなさそうです。

これ以外に the way of doing は「現在」に、the way to do は「未来」に重点が置かれると説明しているものもあります。これに関しては、"new way of creating" が 4,670,000 件、"new way to create" が 33,300,000 件 ヒットすることから、表現に依っては一定の傾向があるようです。しかし、約 7 倍の差がついているとはいえ、"new way of creating" も 約 400 万件ヒットするわけですから排他的な基準にはならないと思われます。

まとめると、両者はほぼ同義で使用できますが、way が「スタイル」を表す場合には特に気を付ける方が良いようです。また、「所有格の付加」や「現在・未来のニュアンス」もケアして英文を作成するようにしましょう。
