you を主語にした had better は「脅迫」の意味が含まれやすいので may [might] as well を使用する方が良いと説明している辞書や文法書をよく見かけます。しかしそこまでして (you) had better は避けるべきものなのでしょうか？また、この (you) had better に「助言」や「忠告」の意味は全く含まれないのでしょうか？今回はこの点も含めて検証したいと思います。

下記に had better に関する英英辞書の定義を挙げましょう。

・had better (should or must): I thought I had better destroy the list so that no one else would see it. You'd better get moving if you want to catch your train. Usage notes: had is sometimes not said: If we have a problem you better hope somebody is there to help you. (Cambridge Dictionary of American Idioms)

・・・Cambridge では、you (had) better の例を 2 つ挙げております。前者は「強い助言」のニュアンスを含みますが、「脅し」の意味はありません。また、後者は明らかに「助言」のニュアンスです。

you had better は状況によっては「脅し」や「脅迫」の意味が含まれるので注意が必要ですが、もちろん「助言」や「忠告」の意味も含まれます。要は文脈であり、必要以上にこの表現を忌み嫌うのはやりすぎのような気がします。

下記に may [might] as well に関する英英辞書の定義を挙げましょう。

・ you may as well (do something) there is no reason you should not do something. If you want to buy stocks, you may as well do it now, when the prices are low.

・・・「～すべきでないという理由はない」くらいの意味で定義しています。

・might as well and may as well: a phrase indicating that it is probably better to do something than not to do it. (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs.)

・・・「～しないよりはした方がいい」くらいの意味で定義しています。

現代英語語法辞典では、「他によりよいことがないのでそれほどしたいとは思っていないことを (仕方なしに) する」と定義しています。

以上をまとめると下記のようになります。

・had better は (you が主語の場合は特に)「脅し」や「脅迫」のニュアンスが出やすいので注意が必要。しかし、文脈によっては「助言」や「忠告」のニュアンスも十分出せる。

・may [might] as well は、「仕方がないから」や「他にやりようがないから」といった感情を含みやすくなるので、had better に比べ「助言」や「忠告」のニュアンスは出にくくなる。

助動詞は細かいニュアンスまでよく考えて訳出するようにしましょう。
