20100127 between A and B は A と B を含むか？

よく話題になる単語の一つに between があります。辞書の訳は「A と B の間に」なので、本来は A と B は含まないはずです。しかし、実際の英語ではこの A と B を「含む」と考えないと意味が通じないことがあります。今回はこの点について検証してみましょう。
下記は英英辞書における between の定義です。
・If something is between two amounts, it is greater than the first amount but smaller than the second. (CAMBRIDGE on line)
これを見る限りでは A と B は含まれませんよね。しかし、下記の例で上記の訳は当てられません。
・Income tax is one the taxes that you have to pay to the nation. It is the tax for the income you gained between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year.
ここで「1 月 1 日と 12 月 31 日」はカウントしないわけにいきません。辞書の定義が必ずしも一致しないのが時事英語です。この点を考慮に入れながら最も文脈に合う表現を当てるようにしましょう。

a. between A and B inclusive とすれば、A と B を含みます。つまり、from A to B inclusive と同様の意味になります。

b. プログレッシブ英和中辞典および新グローバル英和辞典では、「数詞の場合、通常 A および B を含む」と解説しています。しかし、産業翻訳では「曖昧さ」は命取りになるので、英訳の際には inclusive を加える方が良いでしょう。
