【研究】1. the accused は単複両扱いですが、単数形での扱いが多いようです。2. 基本動詞辞典では「通例、単数扱い」としていますが、 Google での検索結果は、"the accused is" が 18,300,000 件で、"the accused are" は 5,530,000 件です。よって「単数扱いが普通」とまでは言えない状況になっているようです。
