本日は前回に引き続き give が「同形の動詞を持つ名詞」を取る構文です。

(8) give a sneeze: くしゃみをする

・The graduating student walked to the microphone to deliver his address, and gave a sneeze. The whole student body stood to their feet and in unison said, "God bless you!"
(卒業予定者が何か言おうとマイクまで歩き、そこで大きなくしゃみをした。すると、一斉に学生が立ち上がり声をそろえて言った。「God bless you!」)

【研究】1. make a sneeze の形も取れますが、give a sneeze が 223 件、make a sneeze が 1,050 件なのでどちらもかなり低いヒット率と言えます。2. give a + 形容詞 + sneeze の構文は 1,120,000 件、make a + 形容詞 + sneeze は 3,610,000 件ヒットすることから、形容詞を伴う表現が自然であることが分かります。

(9) give a shrug: 肩をすくめる

・If she says no, reply with something like, “Maybe some other time, then.” Give a shrug and keep a poker face.
(仮に彼女が「また今度ね」という感じで断った場合でも、肩をすくめてポーカーフェイスでいましょう。)

【研究】1. give a + 形容詞 + shrug も取れます。2. give a shrug は 12,900 件、give a + 形容詞 + shrug は 4,270,000 件のヒットから、明らかに形容詞を伴う表現が自然であることが分かります。

(10) give a wink: ウインクする

・Give a flirtatious wink to someone who has caught your eye.
(あなたと目があった人に、誘いかけるようなウィンクをしなさい。)

【研究】1. give a + 形容詞 + wink も取れます。2. give a wink は 57,300 件、give a + 形容詞 + wink は 5,700,000 件のヒットから、明らかに形容詞を伴う表現が自然であることが分かります。3. give a wink to...のように前置詞を伴うこともできます。
